First Estonian to drive a Formula 1 – he did a test with the Williams Formula One team in 2003 -, Asmer comes from a family connected to motorsports. His father, Toivo Asmer, was a driver too.

He initiated his career in karting in 1995 and continued in the category until 2001, winning championships in Estonia, Finland and Scandinavia. He started in single seaters in 2003 in the British Formula Ford. Won six races and finished second in the Formula Ford Festival.

Then, he moved to the British Formula 3. In 2006 season, he raced British and Japanese championships at the category. At the following year, he devoted himself entirely to the British championship and was crowned with the champion tittle.

In 2008, became the second test driver of the BMW Sauber in F-1, alongside Christian Klien, and raced seven of the 10 rounds of GP2 Series.
